Weatherbys Champion Bumper 2012

The seventh and final race of the second day at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival and it’s the Weatherbys Champion Bumper which is a Class A Grade 1 flat race run over 2m and is open to horses aged between 4 and 6 years old.

Previous winners include the illustrious Cousin Vinny and Dunguib with Cue Card winning in 2010. The Champion Bumper is the only flat race run at the Cheltenham Festival and not only attracts some of the very best young flat horses but also some of the best flat jockeys.

In 2011 the Philip Hobbs trained and aptly named, Cheltenian romped home to end the Irish dominance of Day 2 at Cheltenham but with Destroyer Deployed, at 66/1, coming in second, there were probably quite a few happy punters who picked the outsider on an each-way bet.

For 2012, the three horses attracting most attention for this race are Champagne Fever, Colour Squadron and Jigsaw Puzzle. Bare in mind though that 15 of this races’ winners have all won on their previous run-out – might be a useful nugget to think about when placing a bet!
