Junior Gold Cup Prep Race

It's not often that a race as prestigious as the Cheltenham Gold Cup could be considered a prep race but for Junior, the David Pipe trained horse, that's exactly what could happen as he gears up for the 2012 Grand National on April 14th.

The strategy is one his father employed back in 1994 with Minnehoma and after his seasonal return at Newbury, Junior, could next be seen at Cheltenham on Gold Cup day.

Speaking at his media day, Pipe, who won the Grand National in 2008 with Comply Or Die, said: “Obviously the Gold Cup has been a good prep race for Grand National horses and this year there's another week between the two festivals.

“He stays all day and you have to stay well with the way the Gold Cup is run. Miinnehoma ran well in the Gold Cup before he won his National, Junior loves Cheltenham and will be a better horse on better ground.”
