At 2.40pm on Wednesday 14th March 2012, the RSA Steeplechase will take place as the third race on day two of the Cheltenham Festival.
The Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt chase which is open to novice chasers aged five years or older and is run over 3 miles and 110 yards with nineteen fences to be jumped. The sponsorship of the race has changed many times over the years and was formerly known as the Broadway Novices’ Chase. And from 1964 to 1973 it was sponsored by the Tote but since then it has been backed by its present sponsor the RSA Insurance Group.
It is one of the most closely contested races but there can only be one winner and last year it was Jessica Harrington’s Boston’s Angel who romped home at 16/1. Never favourite, Boston’s Angle benefited hugely from the mistakes of others to become the third Irish-trained winner of the afternoon with a narrow victory over Jessies Dream as apparent festival banker Time For Rupert failed to sparkle.
The much-hyped Grand Crus, from the David Pipe stables is ante-post favourite but thrown in for good measure are First Lieutenant (Neptune Hurdle 2011 Winner), Cue Card and Peddlers Cross all of which are sure to give Crus a serious run for his money.
