What a start to the 2012 Cheltenham Festival with the 2012 Supreme Novices Hurdle. With 19 runners lining up, hopes were high for the likes of race favourite Darlan but it was the Donald McCain Jnr Cinders And Ashes that left the field in tatters as he romped hom for Grand National winning jockey Jason Maguire.
Asian Archie led from the start and with 5 fences to go Cinders And Ashes made a small mistake but got back in the game. Three out, AP McCoy got Darlan going and the race really picked up to culminate in a ferocious battle passed the winning post with Cinders And Ashes knocking the last hurdle flat as he beat out Darlan to win.
A good race for the bookmakers with the favourite losing and a great race for punters who had Cinders And Ashes at a very respectable 10/1!
Making it four wins from five starts over hurdles, Maguire said: “I probably got to the front a bit too soon and he got in tight at the last, but he’s real smart horse with Flat pedigree.
“Once I got hold of him he picked up. He’s hardly knows he’s had a race. What a great buy by Ginger – I think he only paid five grand for him.
McCain added: “That’s just fantastic. It couldn’t be a better result.”
