With the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup just days away, decisions are being made, in very quick succession, as to which horses will ultimately run in it. The latest withdrawal is Medermit, the Alan King trained hopeful who will now go for the 2012 Ryanair Chase instead.
13/2 with Paddy Power Bookmakers, he wouldn’t be considered the favourite by any means, particularly as he is likely to be up against Riverside Theatre, Noble Prince and Rubi Light but King remains pragmatic and on his website said “Medermit is 7-1 for the Ryanair and 33’s for the Gold Cup, so it makes sense to lean that way and unless one of the big guns drop out of the Gold Cup, I would think we will be running on Thursday. I am dying to try Medermit over three miles, but I am not so sure about three and a quarter at what is bound to be a furious pace.”
Is a step to far for Medermit? Untested over the distance, very tough competition but the going should suit him and he does have Robert Thornton on board!
If you’re looking for a horse to back on Thursday then try Somersby. The odds are short enough but there’s still money to be made. At 6/1 there’s just enough to eek in an each-way bet but if odds fall then it’ll have to be on the nose to make a profit!
